VACANCIES: nccr – on the move

The National Center of Competence in Research– The Migration-Mobility Nexus has two open positions at the University of Neuchatel.

The National Center of Competence in Research nccr – on the move aims to enhance the understanding of contemporary migration patterns. Transcending disciplines, the NCCR brings together research projects from the social sciences, economics and law. Managed from the University of Neuchatel, the network comprises eleven Higher Education Institutions in Switzerland.

Doctoral Students

Short description of vacancy: This historical-sociological project wants to explain the patterns of political claims- making in complex plural societies. This will be measured on the basis of claims, counter-claims made by different actors in Switzerland, Germany and Sweden in the last 70 years. It will also highlight the role of national political institutions and the political process, which mediates state responses in different types of welfare democracies to patterns of mobilization.

The start date will be 1 October 2018 (or as agreed upon). The funding of the doctorate is limited to a period of four years. The successful applicants are expected to complete a doctoral dissertation under the supervision of Prof. Gianni D’Amato and Dr. Francesco Garufo.

Requirements: You have completed a Master degree in one of the social sciences (preferably political sociology
or political science) or social history. You have good knowledge in claims-making analysis, in historical and qualitative research, and interests in the politicization of migration and on institutional responses. You have to date not or only recently – not more than twelve months ago – enrolled as a doctoral candidate at a Swiss University. Excellent written and oral command of English is required. Knowledge of German, Swedish and/or French is an asset.

Interest in interdisciplinary collaborations with other nccr – on the move collaborators in the framework of different NCCR events is requested. Participation in an interdisciplinary doctoral program coordinated by the University
of Neuchatel is expected. Regular attendance of events at the University of Neuchatel, or elsewhere in Switzerland, is required.

Bene ts: The salary and working conditions (activity percentage etc.) are in accordance with the regulations of
the Swiss National Science Foundation. The nccr – on the move offers attractive working conditions, including support measures for researchers with childcare duties.
